Hello! I’m Chéna Davis, but you can call me Chéy. I am a Holistic Living Specialist and Full-Spectrum Doula serving the communities of Bergen, Essex, Middlesex, and Passaic counties in NJ, as well NYC. My mission is to guide the incredible individuals in my community back to natural, empowered living. Through a blend of holistic techniques and alternative lifestyle methods, I help clients thrive in every aspect of life, with a special focus on fertility, prenatal care, birth, and postpartum support.
On a personal note, I’m a wife and mother of three. My own journey into motherhood began at 19, filled with uncertainty and reliance on the medical system. Initially believing birth required intervention, my perspective transformed after experiencing labor and connecting with other moms. Reconnecting with my roots led me to embrace holistic practices and advocate for a natural approach to life and birth.
I passionately believe that we, as spiritual beings in a physical experience, hold incredible power within us. Driven by this belief, I became a Birth Doula and Holistic Lifestyle Coach to empower birthing individuals to reconnect with their own magic. We are portals, we are magic! We sometimes forget, but my role as your Doula is to remind you of this strength, especially in your most challenging moments, and to support you in having a birth experience that aligns with your mind, body and spirit needs.
Whether you want a traditional hospital birth, homebirth or birthing center birth I am more than honored to be considered as an option on your Doula list. I have enough experience and love to offer to any life situation. My goal is your happiness!
I offer support with experience for the following specialties :
Young/Teenage Birthing Persons
Birthing persons of color
Single Parents
Beings interested in homebirth options
High-Risk Persons
IVF Clients
Some moms-to-be hire a specially trained birthing coach during pregnancy, called a doula, for extra assistance before, during, and after birth. We need to speak the bitter truth that women—and especially Black women—are too often not listened to or taken seriously by the health care system, and hence they are denied the dignity that they deserve. This may explain the rising popularity of black doula. When it comes to childbirth, having more physical and emotional support might be something you find helpful. Of course, you don't need to have a doula. The choice is ultimately yours. To help you think it through, read on to learn more about what a doula does and what the benefits might be of hiring a doula.
What Is a Doula?
A doula is a person trained to inform, advise, and offer physical and emotional comfort to a mother before, during, and after the birth of her child.
It's worth noting that a doula is not a qualified medical professional. She does not replace your healthcare provider. However, she can offer NJ Pregnancy Support and care that a provider cannot, which we describe in this article.
What Does a Doula Do?
The best way to understand a doula's job is to know the various types of support they can provide. A doula isn't confined to just helping you during labor and the birth of your baby. She can advise during pregnancy, and she can continue to mentor you after the delivery of your baby. It's up to you how and when you would prefer to utilize your doula's expertise.
These are a few examples of the support doulas can provide:
Physical Comfort. A doula can provide a gentle touch or a massage during labor or even just hold your hand. She can also help you practice breathing techniques.
Emotional Support. Whether you need comfort, reassurance, or encouragement, she can provide it. She's also there to just listen if that's what you need. Emotional support during conception can better postpartum outcomes. Did you know that women who struggle with fertility are more likely to suffer from postpartum depression? However, even when the going gets tough, being emotionally supported makes a significant difference.
Information. A doula's experience comes in handy when you need information about what happens during labor, descriptions of specific procedures, and what to look forward to in the postpartum period.
Communication. She can serve as a connection between you (and your family) and the hospital team. Sometimes it may be hard for your family members to communicate with your doctor during your labor. Whereas your doula can work as the point person and help ease your family's nerves while sending information about you and your baby's condition.
Guidance. A black doula can also provide support to your partner and loved ones when required. Whether you have an anxious mother or a nervous father on hand, your doula can also help them in an emotional capacity.
Assistance with Feeding your Baby. If you want to breastfeed your baby, a doula can help you ease the challenges of breastfeeding, including breast distress, getting your baby to latch, and finding comfortable breastfeeding positions. A doula can also answer your problems if you're using a formula. For example, when and how much to give.
Assistance with Caring for Your Baby. If you'd prefer it, a doula can also help show you things like how to soothe your baby if she's fussy, how to give your baby her first bath, how to care for your baby's umbilical cord stump, and many more.
Benefits of Having a Doula
Some research shows that emotional support can result in more positive labor and postpartum experience for some moms-to-be. For instance:
Shortened labor time
Reduced incidence of cesarean section
Less risk of needing pain relief medication during labor
A decrease in depression and anxiety in new mothers
A more positive experience for mothers post-delivery.
As a Doula of color I have a solid commitment to supporting women within our communities. Given the evidence linking doula support to improved birth outcomes, successful retention and recruitment of women of color doulas support broader efforts to reduce long standing differences in birth outcomes.
